I dont see a “complete breakdown” of Capitalism but I do see a phase where a correction in the US is imminent and that is no reason to panic. Dont forget that the US leads technology innovation and the Internet as well as previous revolutionary technologies like the automobile and the computer were born and nurtured by this very system. Corrections are engineered by business cycles and a crash could lead to political churning such as a change in leadership in the coming elections, social churning such as a reborn Occupy, or an elevated consciousness tha leads the change and new or corrected system evolves.

You said “rather than restrict that opportunity to only a few” How so?? There is opportunity everywhere and entrepreneurs are stepping out and forming businesses every day. Are you so short sighted or jaded that you cannot see that? Near me there is a vegetable stand. The farm family that owns it has grown from one stand at the farm to 30 stands all over the area. They employ nearly 100 people. Drive down virtually any main thoroughfare in any city. How many food establishments do you see? Here I can count no fewer than 25 fast food businesses virtually all started and operated by entrepreneurs. That doesn’t count the chains like Olive Garden and Red Lobster. I see people on a daily basis starting businesses from trucking companies to grass mowing, from carpenter to plumber, from manufacturer to retailer.
Capitalism has done more to empower people and raise living standards than any other force in history. Everywhere that capitalism has taken hold, national wealth began to increase and poverty began to fall. Everywhere that capitalism didn’t take hold, people remained impoverished. Everywhere that capitalism has been rejected since the Industrial Revolution, poverty has increased.”

Dick Bonnet.. you know NOTHING about what you are talking about. POVERTY does not mean being unemployed. It means the Cost of Living is higher than income. Im a chef… 95% of restaurant employees are in poverty; while the 1 owner gets filthy rich. Plus the head chef, and the manager. All the rest are paid minimum wages. I know… i was a CHEF for 20 years; and made double what my cooks made. There is no RAISING standards of living; they are GOING DOWN, but you wont see it, will you.

Nothing would stop you from sharing your salary with others on a VOLUNTARY basis if you so desired. But you were being compensated for the effort you put into being a chef. .

I may know nothing but apparently I know more than you because I know that people are compensated for their skills and experience. If someone is making minimum wage for an entry level position then they have accepted that wage as just compensation for their labor. In my experience a good server can make double or triple their wages in tips so restaurants may not be the best example. How long did it take you to train a line cook to prepare your menu? How easy were they to replace? How easy was it to replace a server? People are paid based on skills and experience. And what is to stop any of those experience servers or line cooks from starting their own restaurant?
Based on your experience how would you compensate the line cooks and servers? Where would you get the money to raise their pay? Would you take a pay cut? Would you get the money by reducing food costs? Would you raise prices? BTW people don’t become line cooks and servers as a career choice. They do so because they don’t have the skills and/or experience to do anything else otherwise they would be doing it.

The natural tendency for the capitalist is to reduce his costs and retraining his workforce because he overworked them or they left due to bad working conditions is a cost a true capitalist wants to avoid. That is why Henry Ford raised wages for his employees. Not so they could afford his cars and the popular meme goes but to avoid the 300% turnover rate as he trained his workforce and then saw them leave for his competitors.
Enrico’s point is well taken. People are paid based on skills and experience. If you think your labor is worth more you a free to sell it to the highest bidder.

Soviet Union dissolution had nothing to do with Reaganomics. In fact, had oil prices increased during the late 1980s, as it has during Putin’s administration in Russia the past few years, or had German banks financed Gorbachev’s perestroika, as Japan financed Reagan’s deficits, the U.S.S.R. and communism would still be with us rather than collapse in 1991.

The USSR fell because of increasing cynicism in the people and the nomenklatura. and because of the realization by the Soviet Elites/ruling circles that they could never, under Communism catch up to the living standards of the USA and Western Europe and that they could never match the level of Reagan era defense spending by the USA.
In Russian Area Studies—-a simple caveat—do not listen to Stephen Cohen or any other Western apologist for the USSR. (He is just kept around for laughs).

Reasonable people can disagree about the causes of the Soviet Union collapse and you can speculate all day long with woulda, coulda, shoulda but the seeds of the downfall of the Soviet Union were sown during the Reagan administration with the Strategic Defense Initiative. The arms race ultimately contributed to the Soviet Union’s demise.
Take the Soviet fall out of the mix. Reagan still presided over huge economic growth, job creation and stable inflation.

Perhaps Rifkin has read William Morris—and updated his ideas with references to 3-D printing—which I assume that Morris would NOT have approved of since he hated machines and only grudgingly accepted that they might be used only when there was no alternative min his scheme for a Utopian society described in News from Nowhere—a sort of Medievalist Socialism. It wouldn’t work. They’d all starve to death.
Corporatism was the Clerico-Fascist scheme for control of capital by giving supposed representation to trades, industries, and other economic sectors which bodies would control the means pf production—it was never thought out or implemented — it wouldn’t work either though.

The problem is GREED VS NEED. Simple logic tells us resources are limited; luxuries are expensive. Greedy people want MORE than they need; and can only fulfill that need… by taking from another human being. All wealth is being transferred; new wealth is not being created. The finite resources do not magically multiply. Therefore, it is the GREED in the heart of the person that drives them to acquire wealth WITHOUT GIVING BACK OR SHARING. Does Anyone need a billion dollars to survive? No. but their psychological sickness known as GREED does.

And Dick? restaurants dont give a flying fukk about custoomers, sorry. been in the industry 20 years. before that i worked for a public accounting firm…. and we tripled our billed hours vs our actrual hours. not my idea; i was just a junior clerk. point is? we ripped off our customers every single fukking day and did it shamelessly. Lied to them and stole from them any way we could. That is the nature of business nowadays. I dont know what fantasy world you’re in, but i wish i was there.

lol HELEN… In my FINAL job.. i had TOTAL CONTROL of my kitchen. I used the finest, freshest ingredients, i dealt with the farmers and bakery direct daily. That is why it was the FIRST Restaurant and Only restaurant in my city – which has more than 1100 restaurants – to be Featured on a Food Network TV Show. In 20 years… i saw a lot of ripping off customers. But I PERSONALLY gave my customers a dining experience that was MORE than worth the price they paid. Chefs… are employees. We don’t always get to make the rules, Helen. I’ve had to quit VERY GOOD PAYING jobs because i was ashamed of the food and had no control over it.

But to pretend that your “Mass Capitalism” is anything but camouflaged Socialism is counterintuitive. Sorry…but…if you do not know the difference between free market capitalism and crony capitalism…the debate is long done. Because…in free markets wages of employees catch up with employee productivity. In crony capitalism…wages trail employee productivity…and this is true state of crony capitalism around the world and until wages start rising in proportion to productivity…world economy will never recover from its depression. Now, Economical Democracy makes that happen without government intervention…and it automatically ensures wages keep track with productivity 🙂 as employees will have stake in success of business they work for and would be willing to even take pay cuts and work shorter hours in economic downturns when demand is low. This is ONLY option to solve huge unemployment in US economy. Just giving tax cuts and hoping that an employer would hire someone when the global demand is poor is nothing but A JOKE!!!

Additionally, the employee ownership is in proportion to his or her productive contribution to the economy. Hence, THis is no socialism that everything would be equal…in fact..it would ensure there would be special amenities given to meritorious people…but it would keep huge disparity in check without government intervention

Oh fer Crissakes—I’m away for awhile–and all heck breaks loose. No one has said Capitalism is actually perfect—but it has and continues to work better than any other system which has been devised.
As for greed—who decides what it is or who is greedy? And frankly—as long they do what they do well—I just don’t care frankly. Is Bill Gates greedy???? Than greed actually IS good since we have all benefitted from his greed—or that of Steve Jobs 🙂 SO YOU AND I HAVE ALL PIGGYBACKED ON THEIR GREED!!!! YOU BOURGEOIS MALCONTENTS 🙂 Seriously—now– if one is ENVIOUS of success—well then the solution is a certain amount of self reflection and contemplation. But if one feels so bad about benefitting from Capitalism—-well perhaps a commune might a good place to go for awhile—-if you can stand it for more than a few days.
